LX CLUB v BURY ST. EDMUNDS VETS

‘GEOFF MORLEY IN FORM WITH THE WINNING BURY TEAM’

Result: LX Club 0  Bury 5  

The LX club returned to the Culford School pitch for the 4th annual fixture with 12 players.  The Captain had devised an interesting plan, which rotated players off for 10 minutes, and back to their positions during two halves of forty minutes. Unfortunately he found to his cost that Bury had devised an even better plan, which included scoring goals! 

The team got off to a slow start, with motorway stiffness still seeming apparent in most players’ legs.  However, the defence soon received a wake-up call when LXer Geoff Morley, playing at centre forward for Bury, poached a goal following a penalty corner.  Other goals quickly followed from LXer Norman Ballard and Gerald Watts, and apart from the occasional foraging forward runs of Mike Surridge, David Wright and Rod Cochrane, Alan Dures in goal for Bury had an easy time, and  LX Club found themselves 3-0 down at half-time.

The second half followed the pattern of the first, with Geoff Morley again scoring from a loose ball after a penalty corner, and with Norman Ballard ( LX Club) and John Grinham dominating midfield, plus LX Club stalwart, George Hazell, coming forward to join in further corners the pressure intensified. Gary Goodchild for Bury eventually crashed home another goal, to finish the game with a well deserved 5-0 win for the home Club.  The statistics are now two wins to each team.

The usual superb Bury hospitality at their Club-house helped to ease the pain of defeat, with an excellent meal prepared by Kate Cooke, apple crumble supplied by Kay Hazell, to its usual high appetising standard.

Thanks also go to Alan Dures for organising this very attractive fixture, and David Johnson and Barry Anderson, who umpired in excellent style, plus all the numerous supporters of both Clubs who watched the game.
