FILLY  FASTER THAN OLD GREYHOUND

Once again the elderly of LX gave battle to the young and thrusting of Southgate in a heavy humid evening. Good news – they were short! 

Bad news – not only did they co-opt a young filly to play with them, but it turned out to be Camille Raj, England Ladies U18 right inner.  

Notwithstanding, in the opening 10 minutes a cross from our right was crisply converted by the Chairman, at left wing, with a shot from quite a lot more than two metres off the goal line! 1-0 up and holding well. Play was flowing and even, and LX controlled the midfield, with penetrating passes to our right sending Gerald Wilkinson away on his familiar greyhound dashes, nimbly supported by right wing Peter Ross, who was unlucky not to score from two very good shots in the second half. Testing through balls from David Wright and Nigel Spencer-Knott kept the forwards well supplied, but shortly before half time Pistons broke away to even the score. David Brampton at centre forward swiftly replied with a deft deflection from a hard strike into the D by Mike Surridge. 2-1 to us. The half time advice was clear – keep possession, make short certain passes, keep tight control at the back and beware of young legs wearing us down in the last 20 minutes. But that was just what happened. Pistons scored two goals, both from short corners, in the last 10 minutes and the game ended 4-2 to them. Nonetheless an enjoyable game with strong performances from all, especially Nigel Dixon in goal and Chairman- elect Nigel Strofton, who was notable for a series of hard-hit clearances from left back.
