Win Regional Grand Masters Tournament at Cannock
East recovered from their surprise annihilation of 2006 to regain the title
that they have won for four of the event's five years. After a 4-1 win over
North, East were able to get the better of old rivals South in the afternoon
with an emphatic 3-0 victory. A less convincing 2-0 win over West first
thing on Sunday morning virtually clinched the title but their 100% record
was ruined by a spirited performance by Midlands who took an early lead and
held on to win by that single goal. This left South needing a big win
against North in the final game but North, who had not won any of the three
previous games, proved how little there now is between any of the five teams
and finished the tournament with a with a 1-0 win which was against the odds
but very much deserved. This defeat for South left Midlands as runners-up on
goal difference and West, who were unable to recapture their form of 2006,
finished fourth ahead of North.
