As the Lake District enjoyed
pleasant spring weather
LX were intent on following up last years convincing performances and
this game began with LX immediately going on the offensive and attacking down
both wings. Peter Sharpe was proving a thorn in the side of the Vet’s and
providing a string of quality crosses it appeared to be inevitable that a goal
would come. Alan Dures in goal was a virtual spectator and George Hazell and
David Read were well able to deal with any potential threat. The Vet’s defence
was under heavy pressure and Adrian Stephenson and Peter Ross went close in open
play but LX struggled to get a quality strike in from a series of short corners
and the half time whistle went with the score still at 0-0.
On the resumption LX continued in the same vein, feeding
the wings and maintaining the pressure but failing to create a really decisive
breakthrough. A number of sharp chances fell to the forwards but the ball always
ran the wrong side of the post or brought a good save from the busy Vets
‘keeper. With LX pushing forward for the winner they were almost caught out by a
quick breakaway but Alan Dures in goal was equal to the situation.

On another pleasant Lakeland morning, LX found
their opponents for the day strengthened? by the inclusion of LX’ers Jim
Standish, Andy Holden, Bill Warrender and Graham Martin.
Intent on building on the performance of the previous day LX
were nearly caught out as the Lakelanders put some neat passing movements
together and found space in the LX ‘25’. Good goalkeeping from Alan Dures and
sound defensive play involving David Margerison and Jim Tranter prevented any
score. With Bob Pursehouse and David Wright prompting from midfield LX were able
to move out of their own half but too many passes were being cut out before
opposing defenders were in trouble. With the half time break approaching LX were
finally undone when a speculative ball into the circle was deflected past the
’keeper by Graham Martin.
Early exchanges in the second period were more even and LX
threatened the Lakelanders goal getting in a couple of good shots which were
well saved by Jim Standish. Raiding down the left LX finally equalised when a
firm cross into the circle was deftly guided home by Gerald Wilkinson.
Stung by this reverse, Lakelanders moved forward with more
purpose and began to find space behind defenders. LX were lucky to survive when
a deflection hit the bar but the continuing pressure finally told when the LX
defence were outnumbered and a fierce shot gave Alan Dures no chance.
Once again the weather was kind and all involved enjoyed a
first class meal and LX comradeship in the Briery Wood Hotel. Bob Pursehouse
offered a vote of thanks to Andy Holden for yet another great weekend in the
Lakes!
