Nomadics

v.
LX
0
With one of the Nomadics
failing to appear, LX loaned Ray Jeff to the opposition as a temporary measure.
Opening strongly, LX were soon on the attack and Nomadics were hard put to keep
the eager forwards at bay. Prompted by Dave Ewing and Bob Purshouse in midfield,
LX had their fair share of the ball but the forwards were having to work hard to
find space. Building on sound defence LX created a number of good chances from
both wings, Rob Allchin being especially prominent on the right. After failing
to capitalise, LX then fell behind, somewhat against the run of play, when a
poor defensive clearance conceded possession in the 22 metre zone and the ball
was hit into goal past an unsighted Alan Dures.
Turning round a goal down,
LX raised the tempo and Nomadics, marshalled at the back by David Margerison
were forced to concede a number of short corners but LX were unable to take
advantage.
Following the pattern of
the first half, Nomadics mounted a number of threatening
attacks, with Richard Yardley prominent
and could have extended their lead but the defensive unit of Alan Jackson, Andy
Holden and Robin Mayes held firm. Play was then held up for a spell when David
Ewing was forced to leave the field and Ray Jeff reverted to LX, leaving
Nomadics a man short. Nevertheless they moved further ahead when LX conceded
another unfortunate goal, the Umpires failing to spot a short corner
infringement. With time running out LX tried manfully to restore some degree of
reality to the scoreline but were left to rue their own missed chances.
Yorkshire
Select 1
v.
LX
2
Starting out with the same
line up that had finished the previous day, LX were again first out of the
blocks and pressurising the ‘Select’ defence who were strengthened with the
inclusion of LX’er David Higham. Barely 5 minutes into the game, LX were denied
when a flick from Bill Warrender was kept out by a defenders foot and the
resultant penalty stroke was off target. To make matters worse LX then fell
behind at a penalty corner when a shot at goal was deflected in by an unmarked
attacker. Stung by this reversal LX moved forward with more purpose and were
soon back on level terms. Ray Jeff stealing possession in midfield and finding
Graham Martin who drew his defender before laying the ball into the path of Bill
Warrender, who swept the ball into goal. Back on level terms, LX were now in
more confident mood and the ‘Select’ defence were stretched but managed to hold
the score at 1-1 until half time.
Beginning the second period
in the same vein, LX restricted the ‘Select’ attack to sporadic forays into
their half and the LX midfield with Ted Hayes, Ray Jeff and Peter Danson were
providing a good supply of ball to the forwards. LX won a succession of short
corners which were generally unproductive until Peter Danson decided to flick
the ball into goal past the startled ‘keeper.
With their tails up, LX
continued to press for a further score but in spite of more short corners and
the ‘Select’ losing the services of David Higham with a muscle strain, the score
was still 2-1 at the final whistle.
The LX party and some of
the Nomadics enjoyed a first class meal at the Ilkley Vaults and on Sunday at
the Adel club, Linda Margerison produced another of her superb lunches, which
have become a feature of the Yorkshire weekend,, this time in spite of emergency
cooking arrangements.
A vote of thanks was given
on behalf of LX’ers present by Bob Purshouse in his own inimitable style
