LX at Guildford Tournament

 24th June 2012

Despite dire weather forecasts, although the day started sullen, there was no morning rain, the pitches were already suitably saturated, and by the afternoon the sun had come out. How does Ian Russell manage this year after year?

The LX team, which had suffered depredations due to several last minute injury withdrawals, stood at 14 thanks to the late availability of Peter Curtis and Nigel Guppy - actually a perfect number for 4 matches of 25 minutes, everyone getting 3 games. LX had been put in a more senior pool (fortunately not including the England over 55s, Warlocks and the other strong and younger teams. LX drew 1 - 1 with old foes and friends Ancient Britons in an error prone game (it was the first and early in the day!), then went on to beat Friars (Guilford vets) who were peppered with youths from other clubs, most notable Frank Hardy's son from Wimbledon, as well as an attractive and very talented lady player) by a score of 2-1, and continuing to raise their tempo, comfortably beat Haslemere 2-0 in a game where LX really played fine hockey. As a consequence, the pool play-off was between ABs (again) and LX and a fairish 0-0 draw resulted. Everyone went home happy. Man of the Tournament for LX was Zahid Ahrain, Alan Dures made some great saves, Peter Curtis scored a cracking goal following a flying run down the right wing, and Trevor Denison deceived to score from a short corner (was it a centre or a shot on goal?).

All played well, good team performance and thanks to Guilford and Ian Russell for another enjoyable and well run Tournament.

LX Squad: Richard Clarke (Capt), Alan Dures (GK), Sudesh Nayar, Brian Tubbs, Nigel Guppy, Adrian Money, Austyn Leaverland, Frank Hardy, Trevor Denison, Peter Curtis, Zahid Ahrain, Pami Bolina, Alan Jackson and Rod Cochrane
