LX Midweek Visit to Northumberland
Wednesday 21st March 2012
Reivers 3 v LX 3
After long drives to Morpeth the LX
team prepared themselves for the annual challenge from the Reivers. The match
was played in bright weather conditions heralding the onset of spring in the
north. The ever youthful cattle thieves provided strong opposition for an LX
side with only two players younger than 65 years. Nevertheless, the LX pattern
of play retained possession and mounted attacks in the early part of the game.
The midfield of Richard Clarke, Peter Danson and Bob Pursehouse built good moves
to supply Peter Ross and John Land on the wings. Good crosses provided Rod
Cochrane with a number of opportunities for strikes at goal.
However, against the run of play, the Reivers
managed to get players behind the LX defence and set up a goal to take an early
lead. The LX wide defenders, Bob Jameson, Andy Holden and Gurney White adjusted
to prevent further attempts at goal. Martin Ferrett commanded his circle and was
supported well by Bill Pickersgill and David Ewing. Undeterred, LX continued to
play good possession hockey and managed to equalise as John Land skilfully
diverted a cross from the right to level the scores.
Reivers struggled to match LX possession but were
dangerous when they regained the ball and eventually took the lead from a short
corner. The LX response was to pile the pressure on and a spectacular deflected
goal by Richard Clarke from a cross from Peter Ross, on the right, brought the
scores level as the ball hit the roof of the net. Seven minutes from the end
John Land mis-hit a shot, from the edge of the circle, which found its way into
the goal. An outstanding performance from Ted Hayes in the defence kept the
Reivers at bay until they equalised with a wonder goal from a very narrow angle.
The teams adjourned to the clubhouse to enjoy the northern
hospitality organised by Alan Evans. David Ewing thanked Alan for his
organisation of the fixture.
Later in the evening a group of twenty two LXer’s, wives and
partners enjoyed a dinner at the Marriott Gosforth Park Hotel, with Jim and Anne
Standish, who supported both games.

Reivers 4 v LX 3
After a morning of individual visits to the Quayside, St James’ Park, the
North Tyne Valley,
and Tynemouth, LXer’s were joined at The Parks
by welcome reinforcements Alastair Robertson and Angus Brogdon. The Reivers also
had strong newcomers and another close encounter followed with LX being under
greater pressure throughout the game. Nevertheless, LX was dominant for the
first ten minutes with good links between the midfield and forwards but the
Reivers took the lead. LX equalised as Angus Brogdon
dribbled down the right, deep into the circle and passed from close range across
the goal for Rod Cochrane to tap in at the far post. The Reivers took the lead
again as the LX defence was stretched. The lead was short lived as John Land
scored from a clinical short corner routine; short passes from left to right
around the circle led to a Brogdon square pass being converted from close to the
penalty spot. Despite strong contributions from Alastair Robertson and Ted Hayes
LX lost control and the fitness and speed of the Reivers got the better of the
LX defence. Reivers converted two more goals during a period of dominance as LX
sacrificed the passing game for dribbling. However, a third goal was scored by
Peter Ross as LX fought their way back into the game. Time ran out and the
Reivers were pleased to secure the win. Nevertheless, LXer’s can be pleased with
their performance against considerably younger opposition. After the game both
teams enjoyed a roast dinner at The Wooden Doll, overlooking the mouth of the
Tyne, as the sun set after a beautiful early spring day.
