20TH AND 21ST MARCH 2013

REIVERS LAST STAND    -   Wednesday 20th March 2013

Morpeth Reivers 1 v  LX Club 5

With heavy snow forecast for the day, a last minute change to a more southerly venue meant that the game was be played on the excellent water based pitch at Maiden Castle, Durham University.

Ignoring the chill wind, LX set about their task with notable application and the Reivers were soon under pressure; LX building from the midfield where prospective member, Rob Oakley from Bedford and Roger Girling were prominent. The defensive trio of David Ewing, Bill Pickersgill and Colin Pearce were solid and the Reivers attack was well contained. Using the space on both wings to good effect, LX forced a short corner and a direct strike from Bill Pickersgill found the net, courtesy of a defenders deflection. LX then moved further ahead when a neat move from a long corner enabled Peter Danson to score from close range. At this stage Reivers were finding it hard to get into the game as LX retained possession passing the ball well and making few mistakes. Two further goals were added before half time as first Peter Danson and then Rob Oakley converted chances from close range. Bill Warrender and John Land consistently created width that enabled the hard working midfield to access the circle and apply pressure throughout the game.

The second period began with Reivers determined to reduce the arrears and after a defensive error resulted in a short corner, a direct shot found the net.

Wary of resurgence by the opposition, LX restored their lead when defenders failed to clear and Bill Warrender was able to beat the ‘keeper. The final whistle came with LX well in control after an extremely satisfying team performance against a significantly younger opposition.

LX members, together with wives and partners, later enjoyed dinner together at the Marriott Gosforth Park Hotel and were joined by Jim and Anne Standish.

Morpeth Reivers  3  v.  LX Club  2

With snow on the ground at breakfast, it was with some relief that the pitch at The Parks in North Shields was confirmed as clear and the game could go ahead.

Unfortunately, Reivers had lost an injured player from the previous game and were down to 10 men plus we were short of an umpire. With reinforcements in the LX camp in the shape of David Margerison and Doug Barnes, Andy Holden volunteered his services to the opposition and LX also provided the required umpire.

It was apparent from the first whistle that this game would be a totally different proposition to the previous day as Reivers were stronger in both attack and defence and soon took the lead following a penalty corner. However, against the run of play, LX were soon back on level terms when a break down the right allowed the hard working Ted Hayes to provide a cross for John Land to deflect into goal. Reivers were soon back on the offensive and the LX defenders with Bob Jameson and Doug Barnes prominent, had their hands full.

The second period began much as the first had finished and Reivers soon added to the goal tally with Martin Ferret in goal unable to prevent the scores.

LX responded well and Rob Oakley was able to reduce the arrears but on a bitterly cold North East day all present were glad to hear the final whistle and head off to the Wooden Doll over looking the mouth of the Tyne for an after match meal and socialising.

Squad:  M Ferret; D Ewing; A Holden; R Jameson; C Pearce; R Girling; R Oakley; J Land T Hayes; P Danson; B Pickersgill; D Margerison; D Barnes; W Warrender:

Unfortunately this is the last fixture that LX will have against the Morpeth Reivers. It originated when Andy Holden worked with Alan Evans, from Morpeth, to establish the event. Sadly Alan died in September last year and this, coupled with changes in the EHB requirements for teams in the Vintage Cup, has meant that the Reivers have folded.
