LX Reds at

Dragons Tournament at Swansea July 27th and 28th.

Saturday Game 1 - LX Reds 5 V Scottish Thistles 0

An early goal by Imtiaz Sheikh set the pattern of play for the game. Another from Imtiaz followed by one from David Thompson gave the Reds a comfortable half time lead at 3-0. Unfortunately, just after half time David Ewing damaged a calf muscle and had to leave the field. He was to take no further part in the weekend matches. Two more goals by David Thompson gave us a comfortable win with the only threat to our goal was a back pass by Bill Pickersgill. The victory was down to the team responding to the pattern of play set out by the captain. Forwards and midfielders continually forced the opposition give the ball away and the defence marked well. Quality passing led to the goals.

Game 2 – LX Reds 2 v Welsh Yellow Dragons 1

This was a very competitive match against strong opposition representing the Welsh Over 60’s. Imtiaz scored a wonderful individual goal early in the game. However, the Welsh put the Reds under pressure and scored just before half time. Another goal by Imtiaz gave the Reds the lead and encouraged the team to defend well and keep the Welsh at bay. Mark Watson was outstanding as a central defender and a great victory was sealed.

Game 3 - LX Reds 1 v The Midlands Over 60’s 2

Age began to tell and this proved to be a game too far! Mike Gale had to leave the field with an Achilles tear leaving the Reds with only eleven players. The Midlands goalkeeper made a fantastic save early in the game and after that the Reds never looked like scoring. The Midlands used their fourteen youthful players well and piled on the pressure which led to a goal in each half against a team that looked decidedly weary.

After a day of wonderful summer weather all of the tournament teams returned to the Mercure Hotel for the tournament dinner. LX Chairman Imtiaz Sheikh spoke to thank the Welsh organisers for their invitation to the LX Club to join the tournament.

Sunday Game 1 - LX Reds 3 v Welsh Black Dragons 0

Fortunately, injured players were replaced as Bob Purshouse and Jim Tranter arrived and the Reds were able to field a full outfield side. Unfortunately though, the goalkeeper Nigel Dixon was ill, so the captain had to seek a replacement for each game. The Reds created a lot of pressure but just as it looked as though they would not score the team got one of those lucky own goals due to a deflection off a defender to lead at 1 – 0 at half time. This settled the team down and good forward play gave David Thompson a tap in and following a number of saves by the Welsh goalie. Chris Jones struck a crisp shot into the net to secure a 3-0 victory.

 Game 2 – LX Reds 0 v LX Over 60’s 2

A very competitive and closely fought first half with chances at each end finished with the score at 0-0. The Over 65’s played remarkably well to contain the midfield and attack of the 60’s. Quality passing allowed them to put the Over 60’s defence under pressure but when on top they were unable to score. In the second half the Over 60’s then applied pressure due to more constructive hockey and they took the lead with an excellent shot from a narrow angle by Lou Piscena. Shortly afterwards the Over 60’s scored a second goal from a short corner which was too much for the Over 65’s to make a comeback.
