LX CLUB JERSEY TOUR

Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th May 2013

Games versus Jersey and Old Victorians

At Les Quennevais Leisure Centre, St. Brelade

The LX Club arrived in St. Helier a day or so before the fixtures, some being able to watch the Commemoration of the Liberation of the Island in 1945, comprising a remembrance ceremony, parades and other interesting activities.  All twelve players with their wives and partners stayed at the Savoy Hotel, and on Friday night had an enjoyable meal at the Vecchia Milano Ristorante.

On Saturday everybody was free to explore the Island, later assembling at the Leisure Centre astroturf pitch for the first game at 2.30 pm versus a Jersey Masters team.  Taking time to settle down on a very hard sandy pitch, on which forceful hitting was required, the team took longer to adjust than normal.  The initial goals for Jersey came from penalty corners fired into goal just beyond Tim Pollard’s reach. LX then started to attack, the opposition’s defence with strong passing from Brian Stokes and Nigel Spencer-Knott to the forwards, which resulted in several penalty corners, but none converted. However, a good run down the right by Peter Denley (EH Midlands GGMs) led to him scoring a superb goal for LX, for a half-time score of 2-1 to Jersey.

After the break, Jersey added to their goal tally, but Brian Stokes gave the LX team hope by scoring a penalty corner goal to make the score 3-2.  LX Club were now fully stretched, but aided by the youthful Sarah Heelis and Chrissi Hefford from Jersey Ladies, stabilised the game for most of the second half.  Later, Jersey scored two more goals, one an unfortunate defender’s own goal to deservedly win 5-2.  After this, it was a quick shower and off to the Walkers Restaurant at the Moorings Hotel at Gorey by coach (registered Char-a-Banc no.34) for a fantastic meal, all set up by Tim Pollard, our goalkeeper and LX member on Jersey. It was lovely to see Sarah Clarke coming along to watch the Jersey game, and participate in the meal.

LX Club team:  Tim Pollard (gk), Alan Jackson, Adrian Money, David Read, Hugo Rowbotham, Brian Stokes, Nigel Spencer-Knott, Paj Singh, Peter Denley, David Thompson, Graham Martin (Captain), Graham George, David Wilkinson.

Sunday loomed up far too early for most, but everybody arrived in time at the Leisure Centre for the 10.30am game versus Old Victorians.  The game was almost a repetition of the previous day.  Old Victorians initially scored from a cross from the right to an unmarked left winger by the post, and OVs went ahead 1-0. David Wilkinson despite playing with a cold, made some excellent runs on the left wing and went close to scoring.  However, it was Graham George who ran into an excellent position to register his usual trademark goal from close range. Inevitably OVs struck back down the centre, so LX Club were 2-1 down at half time, also losing Hugo Rowbotham who aggravated a previous injury.

LX had Paul Duckworth (Jersey) in goal for this game, and despite his excellent performance, he could not prevent OVs going 3-1 ahead.  However, Sarah Heelis (Jersey) for LX made a skilful run down the right wing, sending in a superb cross, and from the resulting melee in the circle, David Thompson (LX and Rugby HC) scored an ‘unstoppable goal’.LX then had several good opportunities with strong running from Graham Martin, but  OVs then concentrated on all-out attack, and despite the heroic efforts of Paj Singh, Alan Jackson and Adrian Money, the “younger” Old Victorians deservedly ran out 5-2 winners, the same score as in the previous game versus Jersey.

Umpires were Jack Tait (whole game), Steve Hervey and Ian Simpson (OVs) sharing.(both Jersey).

All the players, and the ladies who walked to the pitch (on both days) led Lesley Martin, and other supporters, then adjourned to La Marquanderie Inn, St. Brelade.    In the evening most of those who had come to Jersey journeyed to Tim and June Pollard’s home for an informal evening meal and very enjoyable gathering, which ended this tour which has now been running for 11 years.

Graham Martin sincerely thanked Tim and June for all their work and hospitality on this tour, and presented them with an engraved glass hockey ball on a plinth and chocolates.  Thanks were also given by the LX Club members to Graham and Lesley Martin, as joint Match Managers, for all their hard work in keeping the tour going for yet another year, also to the Umpires for both games.
