LUC Ronchin Super Veterans Tournament

16th to 18th March 2014

LX  had probably their youngest ever squad in Lille this year  with nine of the twelve man squad making their first trip to the tournament and six were not even members at the time of last year’s tournament. We had a couple of late cry offs so just a squad of 12

Cliff Peck , Stuart Forrest , Steve Branson , Stephen Crute , Sudesh Nayar, Roger Lomas, Lu Piscina , Geoff Lucas ,Graham Ramsden  ,  Imtiaz Sheik , Brian Hiscock and Trevor Dennison

We were blessed with much better weather this year with wall to wall sunshine on the Friday and Sunday

The first game of the tournament was against Scotland , who turned out to be the second best team there.
We had the best of the exchanges but Scotland looked dangerous on the break and some good interceptions from our new full back formation of Stuart Forest and Steve Branson keep them from penetrating our circle. Steve Crute , Sudesh Nayar and Roger Lomas were our wing defenders but increasingly supported our midfield. We dominated most of game from a strong mid field of Lu Piscina , Geoff Lucas and Graham Ramsden  , and skillful  forward line of Imtiaz Sheik , Brian Hiscock and Trevor Dennison resulted in eight short corners but we failed to convert any of these and we did not create many other clear cut chances. With the 30 minutes of time running out we were awarded another short corner. This soon went into overtime and there were no less than six retakes before Stuart Forest slotted the final attempt into the left hand corner  to give us a deserved but belated 1-0 win.

We then had to hang around for four hours before taking on the Dutch Zestigplussers. We dominated this game and scored a couple of good goals from Brian Hiscock and Graham Ramsden and could have had more.

We  had an easy time on Saturday and played well  beating the Belgian Eburons 5-0 with goals spread between Graham Ramsden,  Imtiaz Sheik ,  Lu Piscina (2) and Trevor Dennison and then in the quarter final beat Alliance 4-0 with goals from Graham Ramsden,  Trevor Dennison (2) and Stephen Crute.. Cliff Peck even had to make a save from a short corner - the first time he had touched the ball in anger. Steve Branson  had a slight pull and decided to rest so no subs to worry about on Saturday.

The quirks of the draw meant we then met Scotland again in the semi final , the first game of Sunday. Our tactics to keep the playmaker quiet worked with Geoff Lucas giving him no space but not before we conceded a short corner and only a combination of Cliff Peck and Roger Lomas kept the ball from going in our left hand corner. An open play goal starting from half way through good build up play and finished by Lu Piscina with about ten  minutes left  steadied our nerves , and we held on without adding to the score line despite some good chances , for in the end a comfortable win.

We dominated the final against the Italians without creating many clearcut chances but with 10 minutes to go Brian Hiscock converted a good move to give us the win our team play and quality  deserved.

A really good performance and the team gelled quickly and the whole party enjoyed each others company and had three good meals out together including the now usual private room on the Friday at La Paix., where we remembered Richard Clarke who introduced us to  this with Sarah three years ago. It was good to see no fewer than 8 partners and their company and support was very much appreciated throughout the weeekend.

Big thanks to Sudesh and Pam for organising everything. The Holiday Inn Express did not bother to tell them they were undergoing major refurbishment and some areas had to be seen to be believed.   Other thanks to Roger for providing leadership on the field, and Geoff for keeping our limbs working in the warm up and downs.

Comments from our chairman and some of the new recruits summed up the weekend.

Thanks to Roger Lomas and Sudesh Nayar for arranging such a successful tour, both on and off the field. My particular thanks to all new members who seem to settle down well and were great fun to be with.

I would like to take this opportunity  in thanking Sudesh and Pam  for the meticulous planning of the  Lille weekend. All  we had to do was turn up on time and play, (one of us was kicking his heels watching most of the time but hey...the record book will state six games , six clean sheets).

I thoroughly enjoyed the entire weekend

The  comradeship  was first class as was LX hockey.

Many thanks for organising and inviting me to the tournament. A great weekend which could not have gone better. I look forward to the next one!
