LX CLUB v BURY ST EDMUNDS

Sunday 6th April 2014

‘Bury Goal Bonanza’

LX 2   Bury 7

The LX Club team were under no illusions about participating in a tough game at Culford School against skilful opponents after last year’s hard fought game which ended 0-0.

However, LX had a well-balanced team, but again suffered from the usual failing of not playing well in the first fifteen minutes.  By then the centre forward for Bury, Tony Bass, had scored two superb goals, after inter-passing with his inside forwards.  The LX midfield of Steve Seymour, Rob Oakley and Graham Ramsden combined well, stemming the Bury forwards’ eager attacks until half time, keeping the score 2-0 to Bury.

It was very unfortunate that at the very start of the second half Mike Surridge, playing well on the right wing, was hit on the knee by the ball and had to leave the pitch.  A re-organised LX team never got to grips with the game, although between the next four goals for Bury including two from Harry Gale which were unstoppable, Rob Oakley scored for LX with an excellent penalty corner strike.

It should be noted, that despite the Bury goals, the LX keeper Nigel Dixon had an excellent game, otherwise the score would have been in double figures.  Bill Greenwood, who played in a number of positions for LX, managed to slot home an opportunist goal, making the score 6-2.  However, the game ended with the ball finding the LX net again, Bury forward Ben Gale completing a 7-2 win.

Both teams and supporters then adjoined to the Culford School Sports Hall, where the usual high standard meal and drinks were provided by all the Bury team members.  Kay Hazell was thanked for a variation of her superb crumble, rhubarb this year, and also Gillian Grinham and the wives who organised the food.  The contributions of the two umpires Alan Baker (SUHA) and Richard Heading (Culford School) were acknowledged, and the biggest thanks by all went to Alan Dures, who organised the fixture.  The meal arrangements at Bury are a real team effort, and should be highly applauded.

The current situation regarding results is now:  Bury 5 wins, LX 2 wins, Draws 3.
