‘A Sunny Easterly Occasion’

LX  0    East  3

This traditional Harleston fixture transformed into an opposition team from Harleston, Norwich and Bury St. Edmunds, as Match Manager Tony Williams did well to provide a balanced side to play the LX Club.  However, LX Club did themselves no favours in the usual shake-down period at the start of the game, and inevitably Mark Hollingsworth (Bury) scored for the East from close range with one of those tantalising goals when the ball spins to roll over the goal-line.  However, LX’s Steve Seymour’s dynamism at centre midfield, supported by the energetic Norman Ballard, now fit again, and the robust defence of Nigel Steed, David Young, Chris Blake and George Hazell kept the slightly younger East forwards at bay, whilst having opportunities from several penalty corners which were not realised.

After half-time, with the score against LX 1-0, the planned late arrival of John Grinham, plus that of Graham Martin, ensured that LX had most of the play in the second half, and had several opportunities to score, including one by Mike Surridge (who kindly took on the captaincy at short notice), who did all the skilful approach work, only for his shot to be saved by Kim Steggles (GK).  Once more several penalty corner opportunities were spurned, and inevitably the East took their chances with two goals from the irrepressible Tony Bass (Bury), who seems to enjoy scoring against LX.  The final result was 3-0 to the East, but this was not a reflection on the LX side who had more of the play, but found scoring an elusive quality.

After the match LX and their supporters enjoyed the Harleston Club’s usual high standard hospitality, and Mike Surridge on behalf of LX thanked Tony Williams and the Club, and the two umpires Vaughan Dearling and John Estell for their excellent umpiring management.  Graham Ramm (Harleston) nominated Morris Meyer (Norwich) and Steve Seymour (LX) as his men of the match.

Finally no game is possible without a Match Manager, and special thanks go to Tony Williams who has organised this fixture for 16 years, which is probably the longest continuous one in the LX Calendar.  Thanks must also go to Tony’s wife Sue, who was responsible for organising the catering over many of the 16 years.  It is hoped that somebody from LX will come forward to manage this fixture in the future, hopefully to be held at the Harleston Hockey Club.
