LX CLUB v  Ipswich and District Masters

17 August 2014

Ipswich and District Masters 3             LX Club   4

Roger Girling selected two evenly balanced teams to play in this resurrected fixture. The Ipswich XI began confidently, moving the ball quickly down both flanks, putting the LX team under pressure from the start. From an early penalty corner, Ipswich took the lead with Mark Hollingsworth slotting home a rebound from close range.

But under the skilled leadership of John Maylam, LX slowly began to put some passes together with their renowned short passing routines, the young front runners of David Gill and Rob Oakley were making inroads into the Ipswich circle and it was not long before Oakley scored with a fine shot from a penalty corner.

The LX midfield of Maylem and Ballard were starting to have a real say as LX pressed further and it was a delighted Peter Danson who added a second goal for LX with another cleanly struck shot. But Ipswich were always threatening on the break, Glading and Hollingsworth always liable to cause problems and with Graham Ramsden a key figure in their midfield, Ipswich scored an equaliser before halftime with Ramsden converting a penalty flick.

In the second half, the ball was being passed well by both teams and some lovely hockey resulted in a superb goal from David Gill, taking a reverse flick passed the Ipswich keeper, Chris Wildee. A penalty goal well converted by Gill gave the LX the comfort of a two goal lead. However Ipswich continued to threaten the LX goal, Blake and Howlett were defending with skill and some luck before Hollingsworth scored his second goal and leave LX facing a nervous 10 minutes to hold on to their 4-3 lead.

It was a most pleasant game and occasion, the loyal band of supporters cheered at the final whistle and thanks must go to the skilled umpires of Barrie Anderson and Nick Meakin. Afterwards, a grand meal was enjoyed, birthday wishes were sent to Johnny Gordon and Roger Girling was thanked for arranging an excellent fixture and occasion.
