LX v Warlocks
Sunday 28th Sept 2014
The 3rd fixture of the LX 2014/15 season was played at Lord Wandsworth College, on a very bright and sunny 28th September.
This was the first of the two annual fixture against the Warlocks. The LX team under the captaincy of Richard Slator were lined up in a 4-4-2 formation. The match was a very well contested event, with both teams attempting to impose their dominance, however despite the (average) difference the teams were so evenly matched that by half time neither of the teams had managed to score - although the Warlocks goal keeper was the busier of the two. It was not until part way through the second half that the deadlock was broken when Richard Slator picked up on a loose clearance near the back line on the LHS of the "D" and then stuck a powerful shot into the circle where Max Jason was waiting to nicely deflect the ball past the keeper and into the far RHS of the goal. The Warlocks retaliated and Colin Kimber was challenged to parry a strong high shot at goal which fell back to the Warlocks attack on the LHS, but the resulting shot was put wide of the target. The LX defence successfully restrained the Warlocks attack, the mid field worked tirelessly to break down attempts by the Warlocks to mount attacks and the forwards continued to cause the Warlocks defence some problems. After several promising attempts at both ends of the pitch an LX attack on the Warlocks goal was rewarded when Max Jason earned the LX a penalty flick, however a second LX goal was prevented when the resulting attempt was well saved by the Warlocks keeper diving low to his right.
Entertainment was provided by Greg Hutchins, whose strong run up the RHS, late in the 2nd half, was brought to halt when his shorts ended up around his ankles (fortunately on the opposite side of the pitch to the spectators) and by Gavin Stones who in attempting to control the ball "thrown" towards the "D" managed to deflect the ball onto his head and then backwards onto his derrièr – however the Warlocks were unable to convert the resulting penalty corner.
The match ended in a satisfactory 1 - 0 victory for LX.A great match enjoyed by all. Our thanks to Umpires: Graham Beck & Roy Woolley
LX team: Colin Kimber, Alan Wade, Geoff Lucas, Sudesh Nayar, Zahid Arain, Greg Hutchins, Sarosh Talati, Richard Slator, Geoff Furneaux, Max Jason, Lloyd Wood and Gavin Stones.
