Guildford One Day
Tournament
on Sunday 25th June
Although ten teams
were due to play, only six took to the field on the day, but nevertheless
much good hockey was played, in an excellent spirit and with very little
blood spilt!. In all, LX played 5 x 25min games against some strong and, as
usual, much younger opposition.
The day began with a
2-2 draw against Puritans, with Rod Cochrane coolly spanking the ball into
the back of the onion net on both occasions. This was immediately followed
by a 2-1 win over Haslemere, with Mr Cochrane scoring yet again, plus a fine
short corner strike by ‘Tom’, guesting from Friars.
After lunch, LX
tasted victory again, with a 1-0 win over Friars, courtesy of a fine strike
by Graham Martin. The elderly were beginning to look like potential
tournament winners, but games against Handbags and Warlocks saw no further
goals for LX, and we lost both games. Suffice to say by a number of goals
against in both cases.
Although LX only
brought nine men, we borrowed the odd two here and there, and the team
played well together, with the result that LX were placed third in the
tournament
This triumph was
rewarded with a bottle of fine Waitrose Claret, which , bearing in mind the
time I spent on the phone the previous week, I drank, that evening.
LXers on the day
were: Alan Dures (GK), Gerald Wilkinson, Graham Martin, Mike Gale, Bob
Clark, Brian Woolcott (capt), Rod Cochrane, Adrian Money, Paul Norman
(prospective new member)
