LX vs Handbaggers
at East Grinstead on Sunday 15th
January 2006
Played on the water-based pitch at East
Grinstead on a dull day, it was agreed to divide the pitch time up into three
periods as both teams had 13 players.
LX started well with some good inter-passing, the half backs linking up well
with the forwards. Midway through the first period, Rod Cochrane put the LX
ahead after good work down the right wing involving Robin Mayes, Phil Realff and
Alan Jackson. Alan Dures produced two great saves to keep the LX ahead at the
interval.
In the second period the LX had chances to go further ahead with some excellent
passing movements, but the final shots went just wide of the posts. The
Handbaggers stepped up the attacks on the LX defence. However with Arthur
Barber, David Read and John Longden making some timely tackles, the Handbaggers
were only able to equalise from a well-taken short corner.
Gurney White and Robin Mayes continued thwarting the Handbaggers attacks during
the third period and David Simms and Gilbert Grace came very close to adding to
the LX score after good work by Tony Jones and Alan Jackson. Eventually the
Handbaggers took the lead and before the final whistle added one more. Both
goals came from short corners, one a well placed shot and the other scrambled
over the goal line.
After the match a chilli and rice was enjoyed by
all, during which Alan Jackson was presented with a pink bow tie for remarking
that one Handbagger had a very faded pink shirt on during the match.
LX Team: Alan Dures, Arthur
Barber, Gurney White, John Longden, David Read, Robin Mayes, Phil Realff, Tony
Jones, Rod Cochrane, David Simms, Alan Jackson, John Widgery, Gilbert Grace.
