LX  60’s v Ancients Britons

at Olton on 11th August 2019

Gratefully, the gales of the previous day calmed and a heavy dowsing of rain was perfect to prepare the freshly machine swept pitch ahead of what was a sun endowed fixture. The LX side of 13 players comprised just over half of the Antwerp team plus 3 new members; John Stackhouse, Nic Crocker and Colin Taylor and England’s Kevin White from the North.  In addition, to balance the teams, 3 players who were available to LX but were also of AB heritage played for ABs which gave them the larger bench! After the spectators dashed across the pitch to take their seats, Graham Reynolds got the match underway.  Indeed, the game was evenly contested at the start as both teams created chances.  However, ABs took advantage of some LX sluggishness to win and then dispatch a well taken PC (Conway-Gibbon routine). LX bucked up in the second quarter and started to apply pressure, with several shots from Mike Verity and Martin Hall being repelled by a very active ABs keeper!

A change in LX formation for the third quarter to 3 forwards brought rewards as ABs were limited to break a ways. Steve Mumford and Graham Welch had things sorted defensively, Ian Knox provided the outlet left and Steve Foster right. Kevin, Mike Leatt pushed through the middle. Kevin Colemans strike from the top of the D bewitched everyone en route to goal to bring the scores level. In the final quarter, all LX players started to function as an effectively  machine, getting in behind the ABs defence and switching the point of attack but could not breakdown what was now a packed defence. There could have been a twist at the end as LX pushed hard for a winner that required a magic save by Andy Cox from a breakaway shot at the death. And so after a really competitive and good spirited game of hockey, it remained 1-1. Many thanks to ABs and particularly, Trevor Dennison for his super organisation.
